Wellness Rituals: The Art of Smudging
How to Use a Smudge Stick
Cleanse your space. Center your energy. Set your intention.
Smudging is a simple ritual rooted in ancient tradition, used to clear energy, invite calm, and bring clarity. Here’s how to use your smudge stick with care and purpose.
What You’ll Need
A smudge stick (such as sage, lavender, or palo santo)
A lighter or matches
A fireproof bowl or dish (like an abalone shell or ceramic plate)
Optional: a feather or fan to guide the smoke
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Set your intention
Before lighting your smudge stick, take a deep breath. Ask yourself: What energy am I clearing? What would I like to welcome in?
2. Light the smudge stick
Hold the tip over a flame for 10 to 15 seconds. Once it begins to burn, gently blow it out to release a steady stream of smoke.
3. Smudge your space
Hold the stick over your bowl and move slowly through the area. Let the smoke drift into corners, around windows, and over doorways. You can also guide the smoke around your body or over objects you'd like to cleanse.
4. Breathe deeply
Allow the scent to ground you. Inhale calm. Exhale what no longer serves you.
5. Extinguish safely
Press the smoldering end into your fireproof bowl until the embers are completely out. Store the smudge stick in a dry, cool place for future use.
Smudging Tips
Always smudge in a well-ventilated space.
Repeat as often as needed—whenever your space feels heavy or your energy could use a refresh.
Pair smudging with breathwork, journaling, or meditation for a more powerful ritual.
